Ylläs — Two Villages, One Unique Arctic Destination

Ylläs is a breathtaking destination in Finnish Lapland, known for its rich nature, pure air, and year-round outdoor lifestyle. The area is anchored by two authentic Lappish villagesÄkäslompolo to the north and Ylläsjärvi to the south — each offering its own character and charm, yet both connected by the stunning fell landscape.

A Fell landscape made for Outdoor Experiences

The seven fells of Ylläs are among Lapland’s most iconic and striking natural landmarks. Together they form a vast and varied fell region that attracts hikers, nature lovers, and winter sports enthusiasts throughout the year. Ylläs, Kesänki, Lainio, Kukas, Pyhätunturi, Aakenus, and Pallas each offer their own distinctive landscapes and ways to experience the beauty of Lapland’s wilderness.

At the heart of the region is Yllästunturi (Ylläs Fell), one of the tallest fells in Finnish Lapland, rising above the surrounding wilderness. The fell and its surroundings are embraced by Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, offering pristine nature and a true sense of Arctic wilderness.

Ylläs Ski Resort is Finland’s largest ski resort, stretching between both villages and offering 62 slopes and 26 lifts, many with runs over 1 km in length and the longest ski runs extend up to three kilometres. Its unique positioning means visitors can explore terrain on both sides of the fell and experience varied mountain conditions.

Eight seasons of the north

In Ylläs, the year is shaped by eight distinct seasons, defined by changing light, snow, and nature rather than the calendar. From early winter and deep midwinter to bright spring skiing, the midnight sun of summer, and the vibrant colours of autumn, each season offers its own atmosphere and outdoor experiences. This continuous rhythm of change makes Ylläs a destination that evolves throughout the year.

Seasonal Adventure in Every Direction

In winter, Ylläs is a paradise for snow sports and cross-country skiing, with an extensive trail network and all skill levels catered for across the area. In summer, the resort transforms into one of Finland’s most exciting outdoor playgrounds, with mountain biking, hiking, paddle routes, and scenic gondola rides.

For families and beginners, areas like Ylläs KIDS provide gentle slopes, tubing, and fun outdoor play, while more adventurous riders and skiers can challenge themselves on longer and steeper terrain. Ylläs Ski Resort

Convenient, Yet Remote

The area’s mix of villages, trails, natural attractions, and local services makes it easy to explore with or without wheels. Ski buses link the villages and resort areas in winter, ensuring seamless access to skiing and trailheads.

Reliable Snow and Pure Arctic Environment

Ylläs is one of the snowiest fell areas in Finland, offering exceptionally reliable winter conditions throughout the season. Rising to an elevation of 719 metres above sea level, Ylläs is among the highest fell areas in Finnish Lapland, contributing to its long winter season and excellent snow reliability.

In a typical year, the first snowfall arrives in late September or October, with permanent snow cover usually forming by October–November. Thanks to the high elevation and northern location, the snowpack continues to build throughout winter and often remains well into spring, with snow cover commonly lasting until May on the slopes and higher terrain.

In addition to its outstanding snow conditions, Ylläs is renowned for having some of the cleanest air in the world and for being located well above the Arctic Circle — approximately 115 kilometres north of it — deep within the Arctic region.
